Chapter VIII

Had they asked, a computer in the core lab of the Shepherd Moon could have told them that the sole surviving member of Project Earthfall was moving at great speed across a continent. The signal from the transmitter buried in Mikel’s thigh remained strong even as the distance from the planet lengthened. But no one asked.

The governing committee was busy deciding how they would explain the absence of Terra IV. To ease acceptance by their people, certain drugs would be added to the food supply. When time enough had passed for the drugs to take effect, an announcement would be made that, due to unexpected structural changes in their hull, the people of Terra IV had been relocated, along with their possessions. No one would be unduly inconvenienced by the change, the becalmed listeners would be assured. In each world they would assume the other worlds played host.

Life within The Shepherd Moon went on undisturbed. On schedule the silver, gold, or pastel rains were set to fall on the greens between the habitats. The Bells of Three-On chimed the start of each new day; Three Shift began work as Two Shift began their leisure and One prepared for sleep. In the nurseries the beautiful babies played or slept or listened to the murmur of their mamatrons.
